| Abstract/Contents: | "The influence of three different light periods (8 hours, normal day and 16 hours) on the production of rhizomes and shoots in Festuca rubra L. has been studied. There are great differences in the production of rhizomes between the various Festuca species. Varieties of rubra-type produced the greatest number of rhizomes at 16 hours day length. The varieties of commutata-type, on the other hand, did not produce any clearly separated rhizomes either at constant or changing light periods. Plants of commutata-type gave more shoots than the plants of rubra-type. Shoots from the rhizomes of the rubra-types were mainly produced at normal day length. The production of rhizomes is stimulated by long day light periods, which shows the great importance of the carbohydrate production. Under field conditions there are many limiting factors, a fact that leads to a greater production of rhizomes in spring and early summer. It is a rather widespread opinion that the fescues of creeping type, Festuca rubra L. ssp. rubra has the chromosome number 2n = 56, and the fine-leaved type, Festuca rubra ssp. commutata Gaud. has the chromosome number 2n = 42. The results from the trials show very clearly that even a very strong creeping type can have the chromosome number 2n = 42." |
