Abstract/Contents:"The grass cyst nematode, Punctodera punctate Mulvey and Stone, 1976 (=Heterodera punctate) was isolated in the fall of 1982 from soil samples collected from three golf courses located in Essex county, New Jersey. This is the first report of P. punctata in the state. A pronounced, late summer chlorosis was associated with the bentgrass greens and perennial ryegrass fairways containing this nematode. Average counts of mature, pear shaped cysts collected were 64 cysts/100 cc soil with the highest infestation level at 100 cysts/100 cc soil. No males were present in any of the samples. A survey of seven other counties failed to uncover new populations of this nematode to date. Attempts to propagate this nematode on Agrostis palustris, Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis and Poa annua under both aseptic and greenhouse conditions using cysts obtained from the field during September and October were unsuccessful. The absence of juveniles and/or immature female nematodes suggest that this species may have a single reproductive cycle per year."
