| Abstract/Contents: | "Winter damages on turf following traffic on frozen grass are discussed. By mistake a splendid football ground was cleaned from snow by means of a tractor-mounted shovel. On the frozen ground the tractor and its equipment served as a shaver. Only 2-3 mm stubble was left of the splendid bluegrass turf. Frozen grass has no resistance to wear as it lacks elasticity. Mechanical damage to the plant is also made by the ice crystals within the tissue. Fungi infect through the wounded tissues. The total effect is therefore a combination of mechanical damage and parasite infection." |
