Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted on established Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) to evaluate the effects of annual application of dithiopyr (Mon-15151) on turfgrass quality and to determine the recovery of treated turfgrass from consecutive treatments over a period of two or three years. Dithiopyr at 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.8, 1.1, 1.7, 2.2 kg ha-1 was applied preemergence to weeds. Treatments were applied annually to the same plots for three years on bentgrass putting green and for two years on Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass turf. Treatments were applied to 1 by 3 m plots with a CO(subscript)2-backpack sprayer at a pressure of 152 kPa in 675 L ha-1. Foliar injury to turfgrass was visually rated on a scale of 0 to 100%. Bentgrass quality and color were rated on a scale of 0 to 9. To determine stand density and root development, 10.2-cm-dia. plugs were removed randomly from each plot 4, 8, and 12 weeks after treatment in each year. Each treatment consisted of 6 plugs, having two plugs from each plot, replicated three times. Plugs were individulally potted in 15.2-cm-dia. plastic pots containing coarse sand. Plugs were watered daily as needed to prevent drought stress and were mown to appropriate height once a week. After 6 weeks of growth in the greenhouse, roots were carefully washed, and root length, root dry weights, and shoot numbers were determined. 'Baron' Kentucky bluegrass quality nor the color was affected by any of the treatments. Kentucky bluegrass was tolerant to dithiopyr up to 1.7 kg ha-1. Root regrowth, tiller and rhizome numbers were unaffected with this rate of dithiopyr. Recovery of Kentucky bluegrass from one annual spring application of dithiopyr for two consecutive years showed no adverse effects. Perennial ryegrass was tolerant up to 1.7 kg ha-1 of dithiopyr. No injury was noted with any of the treatments after one or two years of annual application of dithiopyr. Root regrowth, tiller and rhizome numbers were unaffected by all treatments, and turfgrass quality was acceptable. 'Penncross' bentgrass was tolerant to dithiopyr up to 1.1 kg ha-1. A slight injury (13 to 18%) was noted with dithiopyr treatments (1.7 to 2.2 kg ha-1). None of the treatments affected bentgrass color or quality in all years. None of the treatments reduced root regrowth or stolon production. One annual spring application of dithiopyr (0.3 to 1.1 kg ha-1) for three consecutive years caused no adverse affects on the recovery or overall quality of the bentgrass on the putting green."
