Abstract/Contents:"A single application of Gold-N, a slow release nitrogen fertilizer, was compared with four dressings of sulphate of ammonia to give the same total amount of nitrogen per season. Plots receiving Gold-N showed a marked initial flush of growth after which they were similar to those plots receiving sulphate of ammonia until 12 weeks from the start of the experiment. Thereafter they had poorer growth and colour for the remainder of the growing season. If Gold-N was applied at the rate necessary to give adequate growth and colour in the latter period, there was excessive growth in the spring."
