Abstract/Contents:"The vegetative growth of four Norwegian ecotypes of Poa pratensis L. was compared at day/night temperatures of 21/12, 21/6, 12/12 and 12/6°C and at photoperiods of 12, 16, 20, and 24 h; the irradiation being approximately equal in all treatments. Tillering within turfs was most abundant in short days and at the large temperature amplitude. Rhizome formation and elongation were stimulated by long days and, more strongly, by high day temperature, but a greater proportion of the rhizomes formed aerial tillers in short days. Long day stimulation of height growth and dry matter accumulation differed between ecotypes but was generally most pronounced at low temperatures. The North Norwegian ecotype ′Lavaging' had a higher relative growth rate and developed two to three times as many rhizomes as its South Norwegian counterparts."
