Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted at the University of Kentucky to determine the effects of nitrogen on the toxicity of dalapon and atrazine to large crabgrass seedlings. Other experiments were to determine the effects of potassium and phosphorus on the toxicity of dalapon and amitrole. The experiment utilized an aqueous solution growing medium in a growth cabinet environment. Each test was conducted over a period of 8 days and the results statistically analyzed. Nutrients and herbicide rates used in the experiments are presented in Table 1. Evaluations of the results were based on fresh weight of stems and leaves, visual growth ratings, injury ratings, and an additive value of the three ratings. Toxicity of dalapon was found to be reduced by higher rates of nitrogen, but was not significantly affected by the various levels of phosphorus and potassium. The toxicity of atrazine was found to increase as the rates of nitrogen were increased. Amitrole toxicity was not significantly affected by varying the rates of phosphorus and potassium. In a supplemental experiment, chlorosis and growth reduction associated with amitrole at high illumination was not apparent under very low illumination. In evaluating these results it should be kept in mind that seedlings were grown for only 8 days. Phosphorus and potassium stored in the seeds may have influenced the results."
