Abstract/Contents: | "Tetrachloroisophthalonitrile (DAC 2787) and 2,3,5,6-tetrachloronitroanisole (TCNA) were compared with various established turf fungicides for control of Helminthosporium spp., Puccinia graminis agrostis and other organisms causing diseases of Merion and common varieties of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis). DAC 2787 used as a protectant at the rate of 3 ounces of active material per 1000 ft2 of turf in 5 gallons of water applied under 150 pounds' pressure was as effective as similarly applied cyclo-heximide-thiram, Dyrene, maneb, or TersanOMin controlling Helminthosporium spp; 3 ounces active TCNA per 1000 ft2 gave partial but insignificant control. When used against moderately-severe established rust infections, both DAC 2787 and TCNA gave highly significant control after two applications applied at 10-day intervals; the dithiocarbamates (Dithane M-45, maneb, and zineb) and cycloheximide-thiram gave equivalent or less control. Three weeks after sprays were discontinued, DAC 2787 continued to give as much control of the rust disease as the dithiocarbamates, demonstrating that it has equally good residual properties. TCNA gave only slight control of rust 3 weeks after sprays were discontinued. Neither DAC 2787 nor TCNA caused phytotoxicity on bluegrasses at the concentrations used." |
