Abstract/Contents:Five growth retardant treatments were applied on 19 May to plots of Poa pratensis cv. Merion, 4 Lolium perenne cvs, Agrostis stolonifera, A. canina, 4 A. tenuis cvs, Festuca ovina, F. ovina cv. Capillata, and 2 F. rubra cvs. Growth retardation and turf aspect were assessed on 4 June and 6 July. CF125 and 1.25 ml/m2 + dalapon at 0.1 g/m2 had the greatest growth-retarding effect but was too damaging to the practicable. Pydanon 20 at 10 ml/m2 and WR62 [chlormequat] at 0.4 ml/m2 both had a satisfactory effect on aspect but growth retardaton was insuffieient. Schering 4290-H at 2 ml/m2 and Punctan (CF 125 Plus) at 1.5 ml/m2 each gave satisfactory growth retardation and a good aspect. Schering 4290-H had a fairly uniform effect on all spp. and cvs tested. Poa pratensis was the least sensitive of the grasses studied to the growth-retarding effects of Punctan and Schering. Of the 4 genera Lolium had the poorest aspect after treatment, and its cvs Agresso and Semperweide were better than Odenwalder and Weiris. There was little difference between cvs and spp. in Festuca and Agrostis.
