Abstract/Contents:Interest in turf in France is recent but increasing; the quantity of seed used has risen from some 50,000 metric quintals in 1966 to about 90,000 in 1973 (Lolium perenne 40,000, Festuca rubra 24,500, Poa pratensis 14,600). Almost all is imported from other parts of Europe and from USA. France has several climatic zones (differing in total rainfall and its seasonal distribution), numerous disease pathogens thrive (varying according to region) and turf maintenance is often negligible. This paper concentrates on plant behaviour with respect to 4 important factors. Because of French climatic conditions and the general presence of disease pathogens, summer and winter appearance and disease resistance are the most important characters, together with resistance to treading. Before the results are presented for each of these characters in turn environmental conditions and experimental procedure are briefly described. Data are presented on cultivars of Festuca, Poa, Lolium, Cynosurus, Phleum, and Agrostis spp.
