Abstract/Contents:"Nine nitrogen fertilizers were evaluated for their effect on established Kentucky Bluegrass at Olds Alberta in 1995 and 1996. The fertilizers tested can be grouped into four categories: slow release synthetics, quick release synthetics, mixtures of slow and quick release synthetics or organics from biological sources. Response to the applications was measured in terms of increased vegetative growth, colour improvement and turf density. All fertilizers were applied at a rate of 1 kg/100m2 of actual N split evenly on two application dates. Every product improved growth compared to the untreated checkplot in all three categories measured but there was a large range of effectiveness between products. Two fertilizers with high urea contents (urea and Evergro 22-2-22) produced the highest total clipping weights in both years of the study. Evergro 23-3-23 was only slightly less effective than these two. Fertilizers with high urea contents (with the exception of the Evergro 18-2-18) also tended to produce higher rates of growth, colour and turf density throughout the growing season. Straight urea was most productive early in the year while slow/quick release products, including Evergro 22-2-22, Evergro 23-3-23 and Tiger 24-6-12, were similar to the urea treatment later in the season. Slow release formulations containing little or no urea tended to have slower but more consistent growth patterns over the growing season.. The Evergro 18-2-18, Country Club methylene ureas and Tigerganic products showed lower levels of performance."
