Abstract/Contents:A study was conducted on the effects of soil or peat as amendments for sand topdressing on putting green quality, organic matter in thatch and Stimpmeter readings. The plots were cored and topdressed twice a year or lightly topdressed every three weeks. The topdressing was sand, 80:20 sand:peat mixture, or 60:20:20 sand:peat:soil mixture. Some amendment (peat or peat and soil) resulted in higher quality ratings on certain dates, but not on others. The twice a year treated plots often ranked better than the light frequent treatments. Infrequent sand topdressing usually results in layers that create management problems in the future. Color ratings matched the quality ratings. Those treatments receiving the soil-based mix had higher organic matter contents. When plots were cored previous to sand application, the organic matter content was lower than most other treatments. There was no meaningful effect on Stimpmeter readings. Tabulated results include thatch organic matter, Stimpmeter readings, and April to October quality ratings.
