Abstract/Contents:A study was conducted on the effects of Sand-Aid:sand mixtures, and coring on golf green quality. Sand topdressing was applied at 3 week intervals to a Penncross creeping bentgrass putting green growing on a pure sand base. The sand mixture included Sand-Aid at 5 or 10% by volume. The green was cored with a Ryan's Greensaire three times a year, then Sand-Aid was applied at the rate of 15 or 30 pounds of Sand-Aid per 1000 square feet on each date, then it was brushed into the turf. Sand + Sand-Aid inproved quality ratings compared to sand alone. The 10% Sand-Aid mixture without coring rated best of all. With core cultivations Sand-Aid had no consistent effect on turf quality. Turf color ratings were relatively consistent with quality ratings. Small or no differences in rooting were found. There were insignificant effects on macronutrients. The most marked effect was on soil pH. Sand topdressing caused soil pH the drop slightly while coring increased pH. Differences in pH were small but consistent. Tabulated results include quality ratings, thatch thickness, organic matter, root weight by depth, and soil analysis.
