Abstract/Contents: | A long term study was established in 1982 to determine the effects of long term nitrogen fertility on Penncross, Penneagle and Emerald creeping bentgrasses maintained under putting green conditions. Fertilizer treatments were begun in 1982 at the following rates; Urea at 1,2,3,4,6, or 8 lbs/1000 sq ft, or Milorganite at 4 lbs/1000 sq ft, or Ammonium nitrate at 4 lbs/1000 sq ft, at various frequencies. Some were applied monthly from April to September but most were applied less frequently. Milorganite and urea were applied late fall (November). All plots received K2O at the rate of 2 lbs/1000 sq ft annually. Plots that received more nitrogen had better quality and color ratings. Late fall applications ranked well, considering that those plots received less nitrogen throughout the summer. The thatch layer tended to be insignificantly thicker, and the amount of organic matter in the thatch layer tended to increase with higher nitrogen levels. Dollar spot incidence decreased on Penncross and Penneagle, but results were inconsistent for the Emerald plots. Higher nitrogen decreased available phosphorus and potassium levels in both thatch and soil while calcium was reduced somewhat and magnesium was not effected. Levels of available nutrients were less in soil below thatch than in thatch. Tabulated data include fertilizer programs, monthly turf quality ratings from April or May thru October 1987, thatch thickness and organic matter, number of dollar spots on 8/18/87, soil pH and soil nutrient analysis taken fall 1987. |
