| Abstract/Contents: | Studies were initiated in 1987 to evaluate the effect of cultivation practices on rooting of sod after laying. Plots were esablished on a compacted loam subsoil. Treatments were hollow tine cultivation, solid tine cultivation, rototilling, and none. Kentucky bluegrass sod was cut and laid in 1 sq ft rooting boxes which were placed on top of the treated plots. Evaluation of rooting was based on weight required to lift the box and the weight of the soil lifted with the box. After four weeks, rototilling and solid tine cultivation clearly resulted in the best rooting. The effects of these practices on the degree of loosening of the soil was measured with a penetratometer, a tool which records the force required to push a rod into the soil. Solid tine cultivation and rototilling gave the lowest resistance numbers. This correlates well for the better rooting observed for those two treatments. Tabulated data includes lifting force, soil weight removed with rooted soil, soil strength as measured by penetratometer, versus the various treatments and the control. |
