| Abstract/Contents: | "Fish silage from a salmon farm was compared with mineral fertilizer in two field experiments in western Norway in 1991-1992. The silage contained 25.3% dry matter and 19 kg N per ton. Rates of 10, 20 or 40 tons per hectare were ploughed into the soil shortly after application. Silage proved to be an effective fertilizer for Italian ryegrass. Plots with 20 tons per hectare gave approximately the same dry matter yield as plots with a normal rate of NPK fertilizer. Increasing rates of silage increased the content of crude protein. No detrimental effects on emergence, growth or soil structure were observed. The risks of K deficiency, unpleasant odour, spreading of fish disease organisms or persistent medicines are discussed." |
