Abstract/Contents:The suitability of 39 cvs of Festuca rubra, Agrostis sp. and Poa pratensis for growing in the alpine region was tested by growing them individually and in seed mixtures. The factors studied were: rate at which the sward closed in (in the year of sowing); total growth rate during the vegetation period; percentage weeds; occurrence of diseases; and competition between the cvs within a mixture. After 6 years' observations it was concluded that the F. rubra cvs Koket and Pennlawn were the most suited to the ecological conditions, but that Biljart was unsuitable. In Agrostis the cvs Tracenta and Bardot were best, Holfior was good but not competitive enough. Penncross survived well in pure stands but became suppressed in mixtures. Of the P. pratensis cvs, Sydsport, Newport, Merion and Golf had the best aspect, with Sydsport being the most competitive. At this altitude (910 m), turf characteristically consists of Festuca and Agrostis spp.
