Abstract/Contents:The use of turf for protection against soil erosion is reviewed. Good results are due mainly to rapid grass emergence and spread after sowing. The roots increase soil compactness and stability, provided seed mixtures are used which have the correct proportions of shallow and deep-rooted spp., giving a multi-layer root system. Rapid drainage of water generally occurs only from a turf with shallow roots; drainage from swards with a multi-layer root profile is usually comparable to that in forest soils. Mulch sowing promotes rapid development and protects the developing sward from extreme climatic conditions.
