Abstract/Contents:Describes an experiment conducted on commonly used turfgrasses (Agrostis stolonifera, Agrostis capillaris, Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis) to ascertain their drought tolerance. In recepticles 18 x 18 x 18 cm, with soil mixtures following DIN 18035, grasses were cut to 9mm in length and tested. Measuring the growing rate, chlorophyll production and water use, the effects of varying the mowing heights and mowing frequency were demonstrated to be a pronounced increase in overall water consumption when mowing height increased and frequency of cutting decreased. Lolium perenne proved to be the most drought resistant. The authors stress the importance of attentive N-fertilization in order to insure complete regeneration of grasses after a dry period. Festuca arundinacea was not tested by virtue of its accepted drought resistance. Heat resistance tests performed upon both grasses and seedlings proved Poa pratensis to be the most heat resistant, also proving that heat resistance and drought resistance do not often coincide in any one given turfgrass. Following periods of dryness lasting up to 18 days, all grasses were able to regenerate completely within 8 days. Following dry periods lasting up to 24 days, Agrostis canina and Poa supina were no longer able to fully regenerate. Although a 28 day dry period was too long for significant regeneration to occur, it is not yet fatal. Thirty-two days eliminates any regeneration, while periods of 36, 40 and 46 days effectively killed all grasses.
