Abstract/Contents:Includes: Preliminary results of a series of tests performed on eight differing turf mixtures to acertain their respective levels of porousity and leaching into the groundwater. At the time of publication, two-thirds the amount of water applied to the root zones had seeped through to groundwaters. All turf mixtures were fertilized with identical amounts of urea (46% N), and then had the Nitrate levels of their respective groundwaters read at two seperate times of the year (9/11/90 and 1/15/91). Summer readings show that while variants 1-3 are just above the accepted levels of 50mg/l, variants 4-8 are significantly above acceptable levels. Winter readings demonstrate that even though all variants were below acceptable levels, profound distinctions exist among them. The readings taken for potassium levels in the groundwater were directly comparable with those of the nitrate levels. Although this experiment is intended to be held over the course of three years, preliminary results prove that turf mixture profoundly influences the extent of groundwater contamination, and that greater attention need be paid to soil composition in future construction of sports fields.
