Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were established in 1974 and 1975 to compare the effectiveness of 2,4-D, dicamba, and VEL-4207. Dicamba and 2,4-D have been used for several years for broadleaf weed control in sod. However, VEL-4207 is a recent chemical that has similar activity to dicamba, but little is known about the rate and species controlled. VEL-4207 rates used in bluegrass sod were 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.0 lb/A. These rates were compared to dicamba at 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, and 2.0 lb/A and 2,4-D at 1 lb/A. In 1975, four weeds, buckhorn plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber), oxeye daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L. var. pinnatifidum Lecoq. & Lamotte), and white sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were evaluated for control by these chemical rates at 3 and 6 weeks following treatment. Treatments were applied on June 4, 1975. The result of this study show that twice as much VEL-4207 is required for equal or better control than with dicamba or 2,4-D. Residual weed control was longer with VEL-4207 than with either 2,4-D or dicamba. Research has shown that VEL-4207 does not readily leach or volatilize, which would increase its residual effect. In 1974 and 1975, another study was conducted using these herbicides on Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.). Data from this study revealed no differences between VEL-4207 and 2,4-D or dicamba. Initially, the top growth was killed but considerable regrowth occurred during late summer in all treatments."
