Abstract/Contents:"Seed cleaning in the laboratory is based on the same principles as cleaning in practice. This article mentions various fields within the seed sector where a cleaning test may provide relevant information for the seed grower as well as for the seed firm and where it may contribute to a more rational handling and processing system. The performance of cleaning tests is largely dependent on the technical equipment applied. The quality and efficiency of the machines must have the same standard as modern machines used in cleaning plants. A short description is given of some cleaning machines, most of which are used in the cleaning laboratory of the Danish State Seed Testing Station. The machines are mass-produced and marketed. Their function is described, and some details relating to their use in cleaning tests are explained. Methods of laboratory cleaning are explained, and some examples of cleaning tests of various seed species are given including instructions for separation of specific weed seeds usually found in the species in question. The examples are meant only for guidance, since seed cleaning of the same species is not always possible by a fixed procedure. Laboratory cleaning should always be performed by a method that involves minimum loss of pure seed and separation of a maximum amount of undesirable components in the sample. A short explanation is given of the calculation of test results as a basis for settlement for the seed lot. Finally the possibilities for application of laboratory machinery as an aid in purity testing and in the development of cleaning techniques are discussed."
