Abstract/Contents:"For measuring heterogeneity in seed lots, a new statistic D, related to the old H-value, but independent of the number of samples analysed, is described. Estimates from different lots and separate studies can thus be compared and aggregated to give comprehensive pictures of the heterogeneity patterns existing in general commercial seed lots. From this, in time, the International Seed Testing Association may be able to specify criteria for judging specific seed lots to be significantly more heterogeneous than normal. In three studies, two from New Zealand and one from Cambridge, up to 30% of seed lots showed significant heterogeneity among bags for either germination or pure seed content. Results from three years of routine testing of large lots in Sweden showed significant heterogeneity in some factor among sub-lots of 10000 kg or 3000 kg, in up to 10% of lots."
