Abstract/Contents:"The purpose of this study was to determine the among-laboratory variation of test results on orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) for the hand method of purity analysis compared with the blowing method. Eleven member laboratories of the International Seed Testing Association participated in the study. Six samples with a wide range of pure seed percentages and origins were tested by each of the laboratories. Variation among laboratory test results, for both purity analysis and germination, was very high when the hand method was used. Therefore, a large number of the test results exceeded tolerance. Purity analysis results among laboratories were satisfactory when the blowing method was used. Variation among laboratories was relatively small, and strict application of tolerances in the Rules for Seed Testing may be applied in the future for the blowing method. Germination test results among laboratories were less variable when the blowing method was used for purity analysis than when the hand method was employed. Laboratory x sample interaction was significant for pure seed and germination percentages when the hand method was used. Laboratory x sample interaction (both pure seed and germination) was not significant when the blowing method was employed. Purity analysis, using the hand method, required approximately twice as much time as tests made with the blowing procedure."
