Abstract/Contents:"Seeds of four forage species were hardened by soaking in water and later dried back to their original weight or left undried. For all the species the seed hardening technique significantly increased the percentage of emergence and coefficient of rate of seedling emergence at three different soil depths. The best result was obtained when seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours and dried at room temperature until their original weight was regained. In this study it was also found that seed drying after soaking played an important role. It is suggested that seed presowing hardening could be of use to promote a higher percentage of emergence and coefficient of rate of seedling emergence both in shallow and deeper depths."
