Abstract/Contents:"Ryegrass has been used mostly for overseeding on Bermudagrass greens. The newer fine textured Bermudas prompted some courses to try bentgrasses. Vacationing Northerners prefer bent overseeding because they are accustomed to this type turf. Other cool-season grasses might have a place. This prompted us to establish overseeding trials in Georgia at Sea Island and East Lake in Atlanta. Ryegrasses were used at 50 pounds seed per 1,000 square feet, and others to furnish the same number of seeds per plot. Kentucky bluegrass, Poa trivialis, Pennlawn fescue and Redtop, Highland, Astoria, Seaside and Penncross bentgrasses were used alone and in various combinations. Pennlawn fescue germinated first and established itself quickly. It ranked first all season at East Lake, with Poa trivialis in second place. Poa trivialis was best at Sea Island because it masked Poa annua. The bentgrasses started slowly in the fall, but were excellent by late winter. Seaside and Penncross were best. Combinations of Poa trivialis and bent with fescue and Kentucky bluegrass were good. None of the grasses tried singly will provide quick cover, good putting, and mask Poa annua. This can be done with mixtures which will provide even better greens than ryegrass alone."
