Abstract/Contents:"We analyzed the injury data collected from the 10 teams (237 players) that constituted Major League Soccer during its inaugural season. The overall injury rate was 6.2 per 1000 hours of participation. An injury rate of 2.9 per 1000 hours was noted for practice and 35.3 per 1000 hours was found for games. The difference was statistically significant. With regard to severity, 36% of injuries (143 of 399) were categorized as an incident (no time lost from competition). Of the 256 injuries that caused the player to lose playing time, 59% were classified as minor (<7 days lost), 28% as moderate (7 to 29 days lost), and 13% as major (>30 days lost). Seventy-seven percent of the injuries (197 of 256) were to the lower extremity; most frequently affected were the knee (N = 54) and ankle (N = 46). Neither the player's age nor playing position was found to be associated with prevalence or severity of injury. We believe that this information serves to underscore the notion that soccer, as it is played at the professional level, is a sport with a relatively low incidence of injury. When a person chooses to become involved in athletic competition, he or she does not do so in anticipation of injury. However, one cannot ignore the possibility of injury. To the extent that an athlete's participation in a given sport is guided by the sport's injury consequences, the decision to play or not to play must be informed. Many sports, by their very nature, are potentially injurious. Where soccer ranks among these sports in the incidence of injury is difficult to determine because researchers have not been granted access to injury data from other professional sports in the United States. Therefore, making comparisons between injuries in professional soccer and other professional sports is impossible. The return of professional soccer to the United States has afforded a unique opportunity for those concerned with athletic injuries in this sport. Not since the work by Albert in the early 1980s have we had an opportunity to investigate orthopaedic [orthopedic] injury in professional soccer players in this country. By allowing this information to be collected and disseminated, the Major League Soccer organization has allowed researchers to study the injury repercussions of the game. Accepting our inability to compare our data with that of other sports, we compared it with earlier investigations of soccer injuries. We gathered the data collected during the league's 1996 inaugural season. Our goal was to determine the association of player position, hours of play, intensity of competition (that is, games versus practice), age, anatomic location of injury, and time of season with the occurrence of injuries reported."
