Abstract/Contents:"A study was conducted to determine the effects of various management techniques on overseeding establishment and turf quality. A `Tifgreen' bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) putting green at the Turfgrass Field Laboratory, Gainesville, FL was used for overseeding treatments. Plots were overseeded with `Delray' perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) at 150 g/m2. Management treatments for establishment were: 1) no preparation = seed + brush; 2) scalp by low mowing + seed + brush; 3) verticut + seed + brush; 4) scalp + verticut + seed + brush; 5) scalp + verticut + seed + brush + topdress + brush; and 6) scalp + verticut + topdress + brush + seed + brush + topdress + brush, or sandwich of weed between topdressing layers. Topdressing alone or by sandwich treatment produced the highest percent cover and best turf quality during establishment and later development. Percent cover ratings for the other treatments did not equal the topdressing treatments until early December which was 1 month after seeding. Ball roll data at 1 wk after seeding indicated no differences between teatments. Therefore topdressing after seeding or sandwiching seed is extremely beneficial without adversely affecting golf ball roll performance."
