Abstract/Contents:"Scarified or unscarified seed of `Argentine' bahiagrass was dormant seeded with annual ryegrass or `KY 31' tall fescuegrass in mid-winter. Ten treatment combinations of gress[grass] mixtures and rates were studied for 14 months which covered three growing seasons. `Argentine' bahiagrass may be dormant seeded as a mixture with `KY 31' tall fescuegrass in the winter. A seeding rate of 30 and 15 g/m2 (ca. 6 and 3 lb./1000 ft2), respectively, was adequate. Superior winter ground cover and spring transition was obtained. Further, some tall fescuegrass ground cover was noted the following winter season although this was insignificant. `Argentine' bahiagrass should not be dormant seeded in mixtures with annual ryegrass if seeding rates exceed 12 g/m2 (2.5 lb./1000 ft2) for the latter because of excessive competition. There was no difference in the establishment of `Argentine' bahiagrass when dormant seeded alone using either scarified or unscarified seed. Seeding rates should be based on pure live seed (PLS) content rather than bulk seeding rates."
