Abstract/Contents: | "The playing quality of six pitches was monitored during four playing seasons to determine levels of use which could be sustained on pitches of different construction types. Estimates of maximum sustainable use for a playing season from late August to April ranged from <50 adult games per season for a pipe drained pitch on a naturally poor draining soil, to 125-180 adult games per season for a sand carpet pitch and a suspended water table construction with a pure sand rootzone. Slit drained pitches were intermediate and could sustain around 95-125 adult games per season. Although upgrading the construction type increased the carrying capacity of the pitches, the potential usage levels were not as high as had been previously claimed in the literature. The factors limiting usage varied between pitch types. For example, regular waterlogging was the main problem when pipe drainage alone was used on a heavy and destructured soil. In contrast, instability and erosion of the surface, following loss of ground cover, was the main problem on the two pitches with sand rootzones. The application of the results for usage levels throughout Britain is discussed, along with strategies of use for the different construction types." |
