| Abstract/Contents: | "An apparatus is described which enables the measurement of the dynamic characteristics of the angled bounce of a ball onto a synthetic sports surface. This apparatus comprises a wheel or drum, the perimeter of which is covered with the synthetic material, rotating about a horizontal axis. The ball is dropped onto the wheel from various heights and at various offsets relative to the wheel axis. This produces a useful range of ball surface relative velocities and angles. The wheel speed is adjusted so that the rebound of the ball following contact with the surface is vertical, enabling measurement of the rebound height and spin. Useful dynamic variables characterising the bounce, such as the ratios of the speeds and angles before and after contact, are computed from these measurements." |
