| Abstract/Contents: | Trials are described in which various seed mixtures were tested on nutrient-rich or poor soils to find mixtures giving a low-growing, unproductive turf requiring little mowing and suitable for motorway verges. In most cases a mixture of grasses and herbs was most suitable, and in some cases Calluna vulgaris and/or Erica tetralix was successful. From seed mixtures of Festuca rubra, F. ovina, Agrostis tenuis and Poa pratensis sown on nutrient-poor soils F. rubra became predominant, with F. ovina common on some of the poorest soils and A. tenuis on rather richer soils. Water erosion was most successfully prevented by the use of soil solidifiers, and wind erosion by spraying composted refuse. |
