| Abstract/Contents: | An account is given of the results of 16 series of experiments in Switzerland aimed at producing a sward requiring only one cut per year and yielding very little grass which can be left on the ground. Extensive short grass turfs were shown to be particularly suitable for slopes with gradients of up to 30%. On level ground (e.g. central reservations) almost every soil type could be seeded successfully, but with increasing slope a greater proportion of fine material in the soil was necessary. The fewer fine particles the soil contained, the more straw mulch was required in sowing extensive turf areas. Fertilizers applied after sowing increased sward density. Festuca and Poa spp. survived in nearly all situations where they were sown. Salt damage was the greatest problem encountered in establishing extensive swards. |
