| Abstract/Contents: | "The establishment of greens on eroded areas above the tree line is so difficult because, on the one hand, there is only a small selection of commercial varieties suited for higher altitudes and, on the other hand, there is hardly any seed available suited for the specific site. Moreover, there are only few autochtone species whose seed actually ripens, and not all of these are suited or seed production on a greater scale. In addition, the immigration of native plants into the greens proceeds very slowly because of the low germination power of the seed already mentioned and the poor expansion and growth of alpine species. To achieve a permanent green cover, a vegetation is required which is adapted to the site as much as possible. This, we try to achieve in four stages: 1) Use of registered commercial seed, resistent to the altitudes, as pioneer plants, which should be perennial for at least ten years. 2) Collection and propagation of seed collected from the specific seed (seed of alpine grasses and herbs) for sowing. 3) Collection of seed from the specific site for the cultivation of young plants, which can then be planted in the open spaces of the greens. 4) Vegetative propagation of alpine species, which will also be planted into the greens." |
