Abstract/Contents:"While there have been numerous allegations questioning the cultural practices used in turfgrass maintenance for golf courses and the existence of golf course themselves, there had been a void in technical information summarizing the benefits of turfgrasses for golf courses. The first scholarly assessment of the limited research available on the benefits of turfgrasses and their role in environmental protection was published in 1994. Specific functional benefits documented include (a) excellent soil erosion control and dust stabilization; (b) improved recharge and quality protection of ground water; (c) enhanced entrapment and biodegradation of organic compounds; (d) soil improvement; (e) accelerated restoration of disturbed lands; (f) substantial urban heat dissipation; (g) reduced noise, glare, and visual pollution problems; (h) decreased noxious pests and allergy-related pollens; and (i) lowered fire hazard. The recreational benefits include out-door surfaces that enhance the physical health; while the aesthetic benefits are enhanced beauty that provides improved mental health. A total of 87 scientific papers were cited. This paper provides an update on research papers published since 1994."
