Abstract/Contents:Variance analyses were carried out separately for runner-forming and turfted species, the number of replications being continuously increased. A minimum of 5 samples was generally sufficient although a higher number was preferable for runner-forming species. For exact work the species composition should be considered when deciding the sample size. In many cases samples from deeper soil layers gave more accurate results than those from upper layers which could include aerial parts of the grasses.
