Abstract/Contents:"An intraspecies assessment of the influence of cutting height on the morphological characteristics of Tifway, Tiflawn and Tifgreen bermudagrasses (Cynodon spp.) was conducted in a glasshouse. The objective was to determine variations among the three cultivars in total biomass, shoot density, root/shoot ratios, shoot dry weight, and visual quality at three mowing heights of 100, 75, and 50 mm typically encountered on sports fields and turfed horse race courses to determine which mowing height would be most beneficial for turf. Fertility was liquid 23N-19P-17K weekly at 0.5 kg N are-1 per month. Non-limiting water was applied and no pesticides. Turfs were grown in plastic pots with 3700 mm2 surface area in a washed sand medium. A poly-collar provided vertical support. Seven weekly observations were made after turfs were established. Glasshouse temperature was 30C. Quality was acceptable or better in all turfs. There was a statistically significant difference between Tifway and the other turfs and between 50 mm cutting height and the 75 and 100 mm height. Based on the resultant data Tifway mowed at 50 mm would be the optimum turf for these uses."
