Abstract/Contents:"After having planned and constructed over 100 football pitches by the gravel bed method it is our experience that we are now with this method as near the perfect sport ground as practicable. The gravel bed field gives the possibility of complete control of the grasses, so that you can add exactly the quantities of nutrients and water that the grasses need any time. Besides the gravel bed field is easily penetrable to water and air, which not only results in a quick draining off of all superfluous surface water, so that the ground is always ready for playing, but also in a better resistance to drought, and on the whole the grasses get a more healthy and better growth, especially root growth, which is very important to the grasses particularly during the wintertime. The gravel bed field needs careful treatment, especially as far as the three growth factors concern: nutrient, water and fertilizer. It is obvious that the grasses thrive best when they get a regular supplement of slow and gradual working nutrients, when the irrigation starts immediately at the beginning of a spell of drought, and when it is never cut lower than 3 cm - up till 4 cm during periods with less playing frequency, during spells of drought and during wintertime. All the mentioned fields have been sown with the turf grass mixture Kick Off Special from Weibull. The most difficult period is the first months of the grasses. Here a good care can do wonders, among other things top dressing with nitrogenous fertilizer, when the grass is 2-4 cm. This treatment is repeated 2 weeks later. Besides the supplement of nutrient must be regulated according to a carefully made scheme based on annual analyses. According to our experiences there is no doubt that the gravel bed method gives the best grasses, grasses that can stand the rough treatment to which grasses on a football pitch are exposed. A supplement to the gravel bed field is a heating system below the surface including plastic sheeting. The bottom heat can heat the root zone and the surface of the ground at seasons when the normal climate is adverse for the growth of the grasses, so that the playing season is extended. But about this will be told somewhere else."
