Abstract/Contents:"The aim of this study is to test how does the surface affect performance of football players. To do so we have carried out various tests on each of the surfaces: natural grass, artificial turf and dirt field. Tests were made over three days, one per each surface. Two agility tests, with and without ball, RSA test, Borg test and a satisfaction survey with questions about different aspects related to the characteristics of the fields. The study involved nine amateur football players from the male team of the Camilo JoséCela University of Madrid, with a mean age of 21.55±0.88 years, height of 1.75±0.05 meters and a weight of 69.47±4.43 kilos. Main results obtained are as follows: in the agility tests, both with and without ball, we found significant differences between natural grass (where times performed were lower) and the other two surfaces. We also found significant differences in the fatigue rate in RSA test (where the dirt field had the lowest rate). No significant differences natural grass and artificial turf in this aspect were found. Finally, the survey showed that players prefer, in every aspect, the practice of football on natural grass. Playing football on this surface provides better performance in soccer specific actions."
