Abstract/Contents: | "Poa pratensis L. (smooth-stalked meadow-grass) has characteristics including tolerance of wear, drought and close mowing which could benefit turf persistence and quality (1,4). In the U.K., however, susceptibility to rust (Puccinia spp.) is one of the disadvantages of the species as a turfgrass (1). Cultivars of Poa pratensis can vary in their resistance to rust (3,5) but there has been no recent work under U.K. conditions. Of a number of rust species occurring on Poa pratensis in North Western Europe, P. poarum NIELS. (orange stripe rust) is one of the most damaging (3,5). This paper describes the severity of P. poarum on 28 cultivars under two contrasting management regimes differing in mowing and fertilizer treatment." |
