Abstract/Contents:"Ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV), which is transmitted by the eriophyid mite Abacarus hystrix (3), is especially damaging to Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) including the more tolerant genotypes (5). To overcome this problem, clones of perennial ryegrass (L. perenne) selected for their resistance to infection with RMV (1) were hybridized with Italian ryegrass cv. Tribune; and RMV-resistant cultivar Bb 2113 was developed by repeated back-crossing to Tribune, coupled with selection for resistance to RMV (4). In field plots dry matter yield of Bb 2113 was 11% lower than Tribune (4), but yields were compared only in the year following sowing, when no RMV was detected in susceptible cultivars, and natural spread of RMV could not be assessed. In the present work, field lots of Bb 2113, Tribune, and the widely-grown Italian ryegrass cv. RvP were established with the intention of monitoring yield over at least five years, allowing the opportunity for RMV to spread within each cultivar. A mixture of Bb 2113 and RvP was also inlcuded because the spread of RMV in a susceptible cultivar might be less in mixtures with a resistant cultivar (2), and the lower yield of Bb 2113 offset."
