| Abstract/Contents: | "The seasonal development of the European chafer, Amphitmillon majalis (Raz.), has been correlated with the flowering period of selected common plants in western New York from 1953 through 1961. Pupae were in maximum prevalence when Vanhouttei spirea, Spiraea vanhouttei (Briot) Zabel, was in full bloom; earliest flights of beetles occurred when black locust, Robinia pseudoaeaeia L., was in full bloom; peak flights occurred when common catalpa, Catalpa biyitonioides Walt., reached full bloom; and flights were nearly terminated when wild carrot, Daucus carota L., first came into full bloom. The flowering period of these plants should provide a reliable guide in any other locality to the presence of a given event in the life cycle of the European chafer from one year to another." |
