| Abstract/Contents: | In a 4-year trial 5 types of grass + stone or concrete surface were assessed for their suitability as car parking sites in use 5 days a week. The stone was laid down over a free-draining and nutritive soil layer as a lattice pavement, andf the interstices were filled with soil and sown with 20 g/m2 of a seed mixture of 30% Festuca rubra commutata, 30% F. rubra rubra, 20% Poa pratensis and 20% Agrostis tenuis. The most suitable material for heavy use was a specially prepared stone lattice 16 cm thick which could withstand considerable pressure and showed good resistance to frost. The volume of air spaces was high (8%). The small individual holes (4 X 4 cm) gave a total planting space of 45% in which grass grew well and rapidly obliterated the lattice, giving a uniform appearance of turf. |
