Abstract/Contents:The results of an earlier soil heating experiment were confirmed in the following winter of 1971/72. During this relatively mild season the turf appearance improved considerably during the period of soil heating; the vegetative period was prolonged in autumn and greening-up occurred from the middle of the following February. The temperature input required was greater in a sandy soil than in an experimental soil/Styromull mixture. It is considered necessary to install a permeable insulation layer, in which the grass can take root, beneath the soil heating pipes in order to accelerate heating and to avoid heat loss into the deeper soil layers. A finer soil than the coarse sand used in the begetation layer would help to reduce the energy input.
