| Abstract/Contents: | "There are approximately 13,951 golf courses in the U.S., comprising an estimated 2,200 mi2. This compares with approximately 441,000 mi2 of harvested crop land, Further, pesticide and nitrogen loss from turf in the water phase (leaching and runoff) appears to be much reduced relative to row crop agriculture. Yet the piblic often seems to be much more mobilized against turf chemicals than against agrichemicals. Limited data are available, but seem to indicate that neither positive nor negative extreme positions on this issue are justified. A ground water monitoring study on Cape Cod showed suprising concentrations of chlordane, but no other toxicologically significant pesticide concentrations. Turf lysimeter plots in Rhode ISland demonstrated low concentrations of 2, 4-D and dicamba in leachate, on average, two orders of magnitude below the HALs. A turf plot in Texas deonstarted some arsenic concentrations exceeding the MCL. Other data are available from PEnnsylvania and Georgia. Modeling simulations for turf on Oahu as well as limited field data elsewhere indicate that turf chemical loss in runoff water and sediments is limited." |
