| Abstract/Contents: | Trials on several sports fields in which a roller was driven over the turf showed that for highly durable grasses such as smooth meadow-grass [Poa pratensis] and perennial ryegrass [Lolium perenne] turf quality was improved by wear during the growing period. This practice also eliminated grasses which could not stand wear and tear. Such "artificial use" of turf sports grounds is recommended as a management practice during periods when the grounds are not in use, and for the sides (which are used less) during the playing season. |
