Abstract/Contents:"The completion of a three year Canberra trial showed that in this area of frosty winters, hot summers and frequent periods of high evap-transpiration smooth-stalked meadow-grass should be cut to a level of 5.08 cm (2 in.) rather than 1.27 cm (1/2 in.) or 2.54 cm (1 in.). The latter two treatments produced 87% and 70% ground covers of weeds respectively, whilst the 5.08 cm cut reduced this to a 61.5% weed infestation. Where Trifolium repens (white clover) was added to the smooth-stalked meadow-grass and the sward maintained at 5.08 cm the weed cover was further reduced to 42.7%. Also this legume added much vigour to the sward, particularly during the winter when this grass often grows poorly. For these reasons it is recommended that in this area white clover should be sown with smooth-stalked meadow-grass for most purposes. Maintenance of the three cutting heights of the grass plots required a total of 716 separate mowings. At the 5% level this was significantly less than 816 cuttings needed to maintain the grass with the clover swards. The plots were maintained at the required heights by a hand rotary mower which returned the clippings to the sward. Irrigation was given when needed and 10-4-7 fertilizer was applied at the rate of 25 g/m2 in each spring and autumn. The experiment also pointed the need for further Australian trials with improved varieties of smooth-stalked meadow-grass, some of which may be mown shorter than the common commercial type used in this experiment. The latter is in general use here though interest in cultivars such as 'Sydsport' is increasing."
