Abstract/Contents:A study was made of the utilization of NPK fertilizers, applied either once as slow-release compounds or monthly in more readily available form, by grass plots in which the layer more readily available form, by grass plots in which the layer carrying the grass was permeable, with a high proportion of sand, or consisted of fine soil. For a given amount of applied sand, or consisted of fine soil. For a given amount of applied fertilizer the weight of cut grass and its N content were higher on sandy than on fine soil, whereas the K2O content was higher on fine soil and the P2O5 content similar on both substrates. However, because more grass was produced on the sandy plots the absolute K2O and P2O5 uptake was higher from them than from fine soil. The N:K2O ratio was 1:0.95 in grass from fine soil and 1:0.81 from the sandy plots, indicating the greater supply capacity of the fine soil. The improved nutrient utilization on the sandy substrate confirms earlier observations that grass growth is improved when the proportion of sand in a soil is increased.
