| Abstract/Contents: | "Fairy rings, caused by Marasmius oreades, were found on 42% of 684 domestic lawns surveyed in the City of Saskatoon in the late summer of 1972. A peak incidence of 81% was found in 6- to 10-year old lawns which declined to 2% in those over 20 years old. This decline results from rings growing out against physical barriers or against other rings. All eradication methods for Marasmius rings are laborious. In a high incidence region, the subdivision of lawns with flower borders, temporary or permanent walks to reduce substrate area, and hence also the length of time for growing out, is suggested as a management control technique. It may also be possible to produce multiple infections in the soil of new turf to take advantage of mutual antagonism for control. Attenuated isolates of M. oreades are being sought for this purpose." |
