Abstract/Contents: | Synthetic fibre mats (Rollofix-Enkamat) of various thicknesses were installed at different depths under a sports ground and the turf was examined 2 years after construction was completed and when it had been in use for one year. By installing such mats in the bearing layer of soil the uppermost layer is made firmer and the ground is ready for use at an earlier date. The location of the mats did not shift during the period of use. The plant growth and composition did not differ between the varying mat thicknesses and depths. There were no differences in the sand- and ash-free root dry matter at a depth of 5-10 cm, but in the 10- to 15-cm layer the root mass was greatest where no mats were used. The use of mats also improved soil porosity. A mat thickness of 2 cm covered with a 2-cm deep layer of soil is recommended. |
